the measuring stick
What measuring stick do you use to figure out how successful you are?
You might be regularly staring at the competition hoping to be just like them one day. You might be like my friend Brendan whose Google Sheets obsession drives him to keep daily tabs on his profit and loss progress. You might be without a stick at all, taking no time to measure your success because you think achievement comes from regularly reminding yourself that you’re a failure.
This week, I urge you to pick up a new measuring stick.
Chuck the profit stick. Constantly examining how much you make relative to other people will kill your joy. It'll also force you to focus on the wrong stuff.
Throw out the time stick. It should never be your goal to achieve balance. There’s no such thing. You know you shouldn’t be working all hours of the day and night to prove that you’re a success. If you believe that the more hours you put in, the more accomplished you are, have I got news for you…
Get rid of the swagger stick. No need to boast about how well you're doing online or IRL. Accolades will come and go. If that's how you measure success, then your mood swings will come and go, too.
When you find the right measuring stick, you’ll know. It’ll remind you to have patience, it’ll provide consistency, and it’ll give you the desire to keep moving forward.
See you soon,
jill
