Have you seen this quote yet? It showed up all over my social media feeds a couple of weeks ago:
I read it and thought, “Yes. That’s brilliant. I also want AI to do my laundry and dishes.”
I nodded my head as my thumb kept scrolling. I didn’t give it another moment’s thought.
Then I saw one of Shaan’s “5 Tweet Tuesday” posts. He featured the same quote and pointed out that we already have robots doing our dishes and our laundry. They’re called dishwashers and washing machines.
I spent maybe one nanosecond considering how Shaan had completely flipped my perception of what I’d read. He was right.
Then I spent half a nanosecond wondering why I hadn’t questioned what I’d read…
…and then I nodded my head as my thumb kept scrolling.
Has it ever occurred to you how much the act of scrolling takes your own thoughts away from you?
We see a statement. We agree or disagree. But we don’t stop to consider it. To really and truly consider it. It doesn’t float around or sink in. We absorb it and we keep going.
How many times do we do this every day?
How many decisions are we making based on thoughts that other people provide to us?
If I only caught my act of nonthinking during a rare moment of solitude while waiting to pick my kids up, how many times a day do I do this and not even realize it?
Am I the only one moving through the socials this way or are you doing this, too?
See you soon,
jill
It’s so easy to simply move on to the next post, comment, image and let it sort of pour over us not thinking about it in any depth. I am always looking for the next ‘hit’ STS 🫨
Thank you so much for reminding us all to take time to think and formulate our own thoughts. It’s more important now than ever as many news sources, for example, are biased. We have to do our own thinking and research. As you mentioned, we blindly take in information that could then turn into “fact” in our minds. It could be very dangerous. Critical thinking is a dying activity!
