Who runs the world?
To answer that question, you can look at this interesting tidbit sent to me by the wonderful Elizabeth Isele, Founder and CEO at the Global Institute for Experienced Entrepreneurship, from her Chatham House piece:
"Interestingly, ‘economy’ is derived from the ancient Greek word 'oikonomia,' meaning household management. Women have been overseeing household responsibilities (budgeting, scheduling, procuring supplies, cooking, raising children, and caring for elders) from the earliest times. Women know how to improvise and make the most out of the resources at their disposal."
We sure do. Women building things is no modern-day phenomenon. We've been around a long time (forever?), successfully growing businesses, overseeing households, or raising kids, and plenty of us do all three simultaneously.
Some of us do it silently. We don’t seek out accolades. We don’t request recognition.
Some of us do it loudly. We post by way of humblebrag. We welcome well-deserved recognition.
Many of us don’t know the best way to share. We don't have our predecessors’ examples because their successes have faded with time. They never became the cultural references we need to hear. They don’t make it into the history books.
However we've built what we’ve built, we're still doing it. You're still doing it.
I hope you shout about it from the rooftops. Share it on the socials. Say it on a podcast.
Whatever you do, speak your success. As Golda Meir reminds us, “Don’t be so humble – you’re not that great.”
The rest of us are here to raise you up. That starts with you.
See you soon,
jill
